Are your feet suffering from cold floors at work?

Waking up to a beautiful sheet of fluffy white snow may brighten your mood, but it's daunting when you realise it's going to hinder your journey. The bad news is more snow is on the way. According to BBC News, we are expecting wintry cold showers followed by light snow until the end of January. This equates to cold buildings and cold floors which can affect many people who spend their entire day standing up at work. Not only does standing on hard floors have a negative impact on your well-being, but standing on the freezing cold ground adds fuel to the fire.

Out of all surfaces, people are in contact with the floor the most. So, continuously standing on cold floors can lead to serious discomfort for workers. Having cold floors also makes the workplace less desirable and could damage the quality of work, possibly increasing absenteeism and/or reducing productivity.

Jobs that require standing up all day

In reference to Watson (2018), roughly half of the workers in the UK spend a great amount of time on their feet. This means more than 11 million people in the UK can encounter many implications due to work. Examples of jobs that require being on your feet for a long period of time are:

  • Cashiers – Whether it’s in the retail industry, food industry, or other, cashiers often stand up most of the time at work, normally in the same place behind the cash desk. With only a short number of breaks, they go hours on end without stretching or sitting.
  • Bartenders – In this field, standing and walking behind the bar for long hours is required.
  • Production workers – This job consists of assembling and checking products, packaging goods, and more. Just like the other job roles, this type of work involves standing up or walking up and down the production line for continual periods.
