The most effective entrance mats are those that trap the most dirt and water on the mat and thus stop it being tracked further into the building.  Bi-level mats are the most effective in achieving this due to their construction. They are 'bi-level' whereby the upper level wipes and scrapes dirt and moisture from footwear, leaving it to fall to the lower level of the mat where it remains until the mat is cleaned.
